| Internet access for people on retirement visas |
I came to Thailand on a retirement visa and bought a house on a 30 year lease. I would like to have a telephone line installed so that I can have access to the Internet in my house. I now find that this is impossible. The person at the TOT office says that I must have a work permit in order to qualify to have a telephone line installed. My retirement visa clearly states that I am not allowed to work. This therefore means that Thailand does not want retired people to have Internet access in their homes. I find this an absurd regulation and would like to know the reason for it being so. |

It is not that Thailand doesn’t want retired people to be able to get Internet access, but we have problems collecting payment from foreign customers sometimes. Many people leave Thailand or move house without paying their bill. If we see a customer’s work permit it is easy for us to trace them because we know where they work. I recommend you set up your Internet access with the help of a Thai native who can provide a permanent billing address. |
