| Importing gold coins |
Years ago I inherited 33 gold Krugerrand coins, presently worth about US$32,000. I plan to move to Phuket from the USA and keep the coins in a safe box here. When entering the country, do I have to pay any customs fees, tariffs or other charges? What forms would I have to fill out? |

Gold and jewelery are products whose import is controlled by the Customs Department.
But if the gold coins are your personal possessions, you don’t need advance permission from customs to bring them in, nor do you have to pay tax if you don't exchange them for money.
However, you do have to notify Customs you are bringing them in when you enter Thailand.
If you move back you, will have to notify them again.
You will also need to prove that you are moving to Thailand when you check in with Customs.
You could do this, for example, by showing you are buying a house in Thailand, have a company here, or will work here.
For further information, contact the Customs Department, 454 Phuket Road, Muang Phuket 83000 T: 076-211105.
You may also wish to call customs at Suvarnabhumi Airport on 02-1340378-9. |
