Lacking a way to dispose of oil at home, I recently I took my lawnmower to a local repair shop to have the oil changed.
They took the mower out onto Chao Fa Road and in broad daylight poured the oil straight into the street drain, like it was standard operating procedure. I was in shock and disbelief – so much for protecting the quality of the island’s water. Lesson learned: change the oil yourself. But where should I take the old oil?
We do not buy engine oil but a private company, Chok Tawee, does. They pay four baht per liter. Contact Mr Tawee Jarupongsopon at 42/4 Moo 5 on Soi Panieng in tambon Rassada (Tel: 076-261728 or 089-8732106).
We do buy used cooking oil and turn it into biodiesel, however. You can bring the oil to our office in Phuket City. The price paid depends on the quality of the oil.
For more information contact Phuket City Municipal Office at 52/1 Narisorn Road in Phuket City (Tel: 076-212196, 076-213551; Fax: 076-21-3374; Email: office@phuketcity.go.th; Website: phuketcity.go.th).
