PSU to host ACM-ICPC computer programming contest qualifiers

PHUKET: The Department of Computer Engineering at Prince of Songkla University, Phuket Campus is to hold its qualifiers for the Association for Computing Machinery International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC) in July this year.

The ACM-ICPC is a prestigious, multi-tiered global computer programming competition for university teams from around the world.

Qualifying teams will compete in the Asian Regional ACM-ICPC in November 2009, with the chance of going all the way to the World Finals in 2010.

In the competition, teams of three university students are given five hours to solve a number of programming problems, with the team that solves the most winning their round.

In 2007, 6,700 teams from 1,821 universities participated in the competition, which was eventually won at the World Finals in Banff, Canada by a team from the St. Petersburg Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics.

Mr Amarin Deemakarn, an academic in the department, said that the contest would improve the students’ programming skills as well as act as preparation for the Asian Regional ACM-ICPC.

In 2006, the department sent students to contest the regional finals in Singapore and in 2007 sent six students to compete in Malaysia.

University students interested in participating can call 076-276197 or click here for more information.
