Bangla falls silent to mourn the passing of His Majesty

PHUKET: Entertainment venues in Phuket fell silent last night as a sign of mourning for the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej at 3:52 pm yesterday.

Bars and nightclub owners in Bangla, Patong turned off their music and instead lit up candles at their venues to pay tribute to His Majesty.

A similar show of grief could be seen at Saphan Hin in Phuket Town and other areas throughout the island.

“We have yet to receive any official letter to close up shop and stop selling alcohol,” said Weerawit Kurasombat, president of the Patong Entertainment Business Association.

“Last night, however, some venues turned off their music, some stopped selling alcohol, and some shut down entirely of their own accord, out of respect and consideration.”

He added that the association awaits official instructions, but will respect whatever announcement is made by the Prime Minister’s Office.

“We do hope the tourists understand,” added Mr Weerawit.
