Patong awaits bid to bury beachfront cables

PHUKET: The project that will see unsightly power cables along Patong’s beachfront moved underground is awaiting finalization of the bidding process.

The 230-million-baht project will be jointly funded by the Phuket Provincial Electric Authority (PEA) and the Patong Municipality (story here).

“Contractors have submitted their bids to the PEA headquarters in Bangkok and one will be chosen by March,” confirmed Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsup.

Construction is to begin no later than June, with the project scheduled for completion by the end of 2017.

The Patong beachfront zone is the second tourist area in Phuket to receive a face lift by getting the ugly poles and cables out of sight. The cables along Thalang Road in Phuket Old Town were buried in 2010, followed by the ones along Dibuk and Krabi Roads in May 2012, at a cost of about 39 million baht. (story here).
