Phuket Gov warns against showing ‘too much’ skin during Songkran

PHUKET: Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut issued a warning yesterday about showing too much skin during the Thai New Year Songkran Festival next month.

“Tourists need to be aware of how they dress and of their surroundings when participating in the Songkran Festival. Please do not just wear a bikini, as it might make you a target for sexual harassment,” said Governor Maitri. “We want everyone to enjoy a safe and fun Songkran.”

Additionally, Governor Maitri vowed to crack down on driving violations in an effort to boost safety during the new year festivities.

“The Seven Days of Danger safety campaign will run from April 11 to 17. Last year, 27 injuries were reported, but no deaths. This year, we will work even harder to prevent injuries from happening,” Gov Maitri said.

“In Patong, we will be especially strict and check that everyone is wearing a helmet and has a driver’s license,” he said.

Gov Maitri assigned each vice governor to each take charge of one of the districts: Sommai Prijasilpa will take charge of Muang, Somkiet Sangkaosuttirak will watch Kathu and Chamroen Tipayapongtada will be in charge of Thalang.

“Each of them will work with local officers and and report directly to me,” said Gov Maitri.

Each morning during the Seven Days of Danger, officials will meet at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation – Phuket Office for updates on any accidents, he added.
