Phuket, Tangier plan twin-city partnership

PHUKET: A twin-cities partnership between Phuket and Tangier is in the works following a meeting between the Phuket governor and the Moroccan ambassador to Thailand.

“About 10,000 Moroccans visit Phuket each year,” said His Excellency Ambassador Abdelilah El Housni. “Although this number may not seem large, most of these are luxury travelers who own private jets and stay for an average of a month at a time.”

Tangier is a rapidly developing Mediterranean coastal city in the Kingdom of Morocco with a rich history and culture.

The ambassador said that he believed a twin cities partnership would bolster a good relationship and provide convenience for travelers from both countries.

“Phuket considers this to be an important partnership as well; we will take a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Morocco in the near future in order to formalize this agreement,” said Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada. “We would also like to thank His Excellency for his kindness.”

Phuket also signed a twin city MoU with Xiamen, China in December last year and one with Penang, Malaysia the year before (story here and here).
