Scotsman found dead in Patong rental room

PHUKET: A Scottish tourist was found hanging from a wire inside the closet of his rental room in Patong this morning.

The body of 45-year-old Michael William Smith, born in Edinburgh, was discovered by an employee of the residence and a friend, confirmed Lt Col Jongserm Preecha of the Patong Police.

“His friend, who lives next door, came to ask the employee to open Mr Smith’s door, as he was worried and couldn’t get a hold of him,” said Col Jongserm.

“The door handle was locked and the chain lock was also engaged. However, once they were able to get inside the room, they found Mr Smith’s body.”

Police declined to name the person identified as Mr Smith’s friend. However, there were no signs of a struggle and Mr Smith’s wallet was still in the room along with about 6,000 baht cash.

“We will continue to investigate the case. We have yet to rule out either suicide or foul play,” said Col Jongserm.

The British Embassy in Bangkok was informed of the death.
