Second turtle killed by propellers in Krabi this week

KRABI: Marine officials are urging boat operators to slow down and take greater care while plying Phang Nga Bay, after the body of a green sea turtle washed ashore in Phi Phi National Park on Saturday.

Officers believe the endangered animal was killed by a boat propeller.

“The turtle is about 90 centimeters long and weighs about 40 kilograms. The shell was broken and it appears that the right front flipper was also slashed. Both eyes had also sustained injuries,” said Sarayuth Tanthien, chief of the Hat Noppharat Thara – Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park.

Locals found the turtle at Hat Noppharat Thara Beach at about 8pm on Saturday.

“This is the second sea turtle death caused by boat propellers in Krabi this week,” Mr Sarayuth said. “Therefore, I would like to urge all the boat operators to be more careful.”

During monsoon season, the turtles can be pushed into shallower waters by strong winds and currents, Mr Sarayuth explained.

“Please help each other. We do not want to see more innocent marine deaths,” he said.
