PHUKET: The island of Phuket has a lot of dogs – from pampered poodles that ride motorcycles with their masters to skinny, mangy dogs that live on charity in the streets.

Because there are no leash laws and because people support stray dogs by feeding them, it’s easy to see all types of dogs out and about on their own.

Some run after joggers and bikers, occasionally biting them. Others, like the three pit bulls that attacked a man in front of his own house (story here), sending him to the hospital for more than three weeks, do much greater harm.

The Phuket Gazette’s latest online poll addresses the problem and asks, “Should all stray dogs be rounded up and taken to dog shelters?”

Responses available in the poll are:
  • Yes, get them off the street, they are a nuisance and dangerous.
  • Yes, but only dogs identified as aggressive.
  • No, the focus shouldn’t be on the dogs but on the people who feed them and perpetuate their existence.
  • No, there’s no need to collect them, they’re not a big problem in Phuket.
  • No opinion.
