AO CHALONG: Kevin Gillow and his crew on Minx led the fleet from start to finish in Race 5 of the Ao Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC) Keelboat and Multihull Race Series 2007 on June 10, putting them in the top spot overall in the Racing class.

Minx taking line honors was in no small part thanks to crewman Rob Taylor, whose outstanding effort in preparing the yacht for the race won him the Image Asia Encouragement award.

Nick Band, usually on Emerald Blue, finished in second place in the Racing class on his new yacht Wind Song, followed by Nigel Beare on Fidji.

Day sponsor Harry and Susan “Lady Pie” Usher on Eos won the Cruising class ahead of Tony Swain Dudman on Onyx and his crew of more than 20.

Tony Merrett finished third in the class on his former Yachtpro Hunter 31 Wild Orchid.

With Phuket’s fleet of Firefly 850s still en route back from the Koh Samui International Regatta, Bob Brindley on Xcatriot was the only multihull racing on the bay, and took top honors with a cruise around the course.

At Samui, Voodoo Child won first place in the regatta’s inaugural Firefly 850 class with Firefly designer Mark Pescott as skipper and a Samui crew.

Phuket’s Henry Kaye on Mamba finished second overall with fellow Phuket sailors Roger Kingdon on Moto Inzi finishing in third place and Chris Jongerius on The Frog finishing fourth.

Other Phuket yachts that sailed well at Samui were Ben Copely’s Asia Spirit, which finished third in the IRC1 class, followed by David Lindahl’s La Samudra in fourth place.

The next ACYC race day will be June 24. “Skipper’s briefing will be at 10:30 am followed by a midday start. We’re starting a little later as the southwest winds have arrived and we now have better breeze in the late afternoon,” said Tony Knight of the ACYC.

All are welcome to join. For more information call Tony at 081-7470087.
