How to deal with an ATM scam

How many people have been scammed when using ATM machines in Phuket? This is a very serious problem here. Can you imagine if it happened to you? One moment you are loving your life on this paradise island, sitting back, safe in the knowledge that your retirement money is secure in a bank…

Then you make quick trip to the ATM and you meet a couple of seemingly nice French speaking gentleman that inform you the machine has spat out another 1,000 baht from your withdrawal and “it often happens, just put the card back in quickly, you have only 30 seconds otherwise it will eat your card.”

You only care about not losing the card, and for sure the guys behind have seen your pin number. The rest is obvious, goodbye paradise island – 200,000 baht gone in less than 12 hours.

This happened to my friend, and after going through all the correct channels he has now been told that he has no chance of getting back his money as there is a CCTV image of him with the French guys and they suggest he had consented to the situation. What happened to his 30,000 baht limit a day? So Siam Bank, are your customers protected against this or not?

An ATM limit can be changed by customer request. It starts with a 20,000 baht per day limit for a savings account. Then our customers are welcome to change their limit up to 200,000 baht per day.

In this case, the card limit must have been changed to 200,000 baht per day by the customer.

In this particular situation I would suggest the customer file a complain with the police. Then the police will contact us. We are willing to provide any required information to the police in these situations. If anyone needs more information or further advice please contact SCB call center at 02-777 7777.
