US Embassy in Bangok offers condolences
The US Embassy in Bangkok has expressed condolences to the families and friends of the two Thai students that appear to have been involved in a tragic accident in California.
In its two-sentence statement, the Embassy said: “We are closely following the situation and express our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the two Thai students involved in this tragic accident in California.”
The US Embassy in Bangkok had issued visas for family members of the students who have travelled to California, read the statement.
The embassy issued the statement after a relative of one of the two Thai students presumed killed in a car crash in the United States applied for entry visas for members of a Thai rescue team.
Ekkachai Taidecha, the uncle of Bhakapon Chairattanasongporn, 28, said Thai rescuers should have a chance to handle the case as US authorities had failed to retrieve the students’ bodies.
US authorities have been postponing attempts to recover the car rented by a pair of Thai students, Min and Golf. It’s now two weeks since Thiwadee Saengsuriyarit (Min) and Pakkaphol Chairattanasongporn (Golf) went missing on their drive to to King’s Canyon National Park.
The car has plunged down a 150 metre cliff. Whilst the car can be seen at the bottom of the ravine, there has been no sightings of the students. They had been attending the University of Florida and were having a summer break in California.
Officials say the attempted recovery of the vehicle has been delayed because of the poor weather conditions and a forecast that is predicting more rain. More rain will lead to dangerous currents in the river at the bottom of the cliff. A video has been published by a US-based Thai online newspaper called ‘Siam Town US’ which shows the rental car at the bottom of the ravine and the windows of the car blurred out leading to speculation that authorities are aware that their bodies are still in the car.
