20 die in traffic accidents

PHUKET: Twenty people died in traffic accidents between May 20 and June 20, according to statistics from the Wachira, Thalang and Patong government hospitals. Ampaipan Pawawattananusorn of the Phuket Provincial Health Office reports that 18 of the victims died while on motorcycles, while one was in a car and one was riding a bicycle. In the same period, 84 people were injured in car accidents, while 763 were hurt riding motorbikes. The injury figures are up significantly from the same period last year when 32 were injured in automobile crashes and 717 were injured on motorbikes. This year’s totals from January 1 to June 20 show 12 people killed in cars and 90 on motorcycles, with 5,658 people injured, of whom 5,224 – 92% – were on motorbikes.
