Belgian, struck twice, dies in motorcycle accident

CHALONG: A 43-year-old Belgian man, named by police as Carlo Webers, was killed in a traffic accident on Chaofa Nai Rd early yesterday morning. According to Pol Maj Thanate Poungmanee of Chalong Police Station, Mr Webers was riding a motorcycle into Phuket Town at around 1 am. He was near the Tang Luck restaurant when he was hit by a sedan coming from the opposite direction. Mr Webers’ body was thrown into the air upon impact and landed close to the middle of the road. The car behind the one that hit him could not stop and ran over Mr Webers as he lay on the road. “The second car just couldn’t stop soon enough, so it ran over him. We really don’t know whether [Webers] died because of the first collision or because the second car ran over his chest,” said Pol Maj Thanate. The first sedan was driven by Chaiyaporn Rojjanawittayakul, and the second by Pisit Kertmongkol. Both stopped and remained at the scene of the accident. “We still don’t know whose fault it is,” reported Pol Maj Thanate. “The accident took place at night and there were no witnesses. We are waiting for the results of blood alcohol tests, and we have further questioning to do.” The police found Carlo’s passport on him. While the passport indicates the victim was a tourist, the police believe he might have been a resident.
