Dengue danger “greater this year’

PHUKET: Dr Wanchai Sattayawutthipong, chief of the Phuket Provincial Health Office (PPHO) warned yesterday that the chances of people contracting dengue fever this year are higher than they were last year. According to figures released from the Ministry of Health, in the year to June 29 there have been 43,893 reported cases of the mosquito-borne disease in Thailand, and 64 deaths from it. Dr Wanchai added that, in Phuket, 139 cases were reported in the same period, though with no deaths. The Health Chief recommended everyone take action to avert dengue fever, particularly by covering all containers holding water in order to prevent mosquitoes laying eggs, and by avoiding places with high concentrations of mosquitoes. Basic symptoms of dengue fever are a high fever (without runny nose or coughing), headaches, aches and pains in the arms and legs, and red blotches on the skin. People who have dengue fever should avoid aspirin, Dr Wanchai said, as it may cause internal bleeding. They should instead take paracetamol to bring down the fever.
