Gambling continues to top arrest stats

PHUKET: Yet again, gambling topped the arrest statistics in May, with 258 people held for gambling offenses between May 1 and 25. The Provincial Police statistics showed arrests of illegal immigrants coming in second place, with 95 people arrested, followed by narcotics offenses, with 43 people arrested for offenses related to “ya bah” (methamphetamine). A total of 1,528 ya bah pills were seized. Other arrests included four murders, one in which the perpetrator is still at large; one of attempted murder; three cases of assault, in which 10 people were arrested; and two cases of sexual assault. Additionally, 11 people were charged with prostitution. The police also released statistics for driving offenses committed last month. A total of 261 drivers were charged with speeding between May 4 and May 19. This figure includes 135 speeders caught with two new laser guns that police began using in a trial run on May 15.
