Governor proposes new sports complex

PHUKET: Phuket’s new Governor, Udomsak Usawarangkura, would like to see 2,000 rai of government land at Tah Chat Chai, the northern end of the island, developed as a sports complex with the aim of encouraging sports tourism. He told the Gazette in an exclusive interview today that implementation of the idea should follow the recent decision to build the International Convention and Exhibition Center (ICEC) in Saphan Hin, traditionally Phuket’s sporting center. “In the future, Phuket should have a large area of land for foreigners who want to leave their home countries during winter to practice their sports in [a warm climate],” he said. “Many people have suggested this idea to me. The area in Tah Chat Chai would be ideal for a sports complex because we have many five-star hotels [not too far away]. “Who knows? Perhaps one day David Beckham will come to practice soccer in Phuket,” Gov Udomsak added. He said that the area should also include camping facilities. “The business of sport is very important, and a sports facility should attract shophouses and other developments, too,” Gov Udomsak added. He noted that around November next year, Phuket will play host to a round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup at Surakul Stadium.
