HRH to return to Phuket

PHUKET: HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will be in Phuket again from November 12 to 14, Governor Udomsak Uswarangkura announced yesterday morning.

Although the official itinerary has yet to be announced, he said that the Princess will bring with her eight of the 12 adjudicators of the Prince Mahidol Award, which is given each year in recognition of exemplary contributions to medicine, public health and social services.

Among her guests will be Professor Sir David Weatherall of Britain, who won the award in 2001 for his research into molecular genetics, hematology, pathology and clinical medicine, and Dr Adetokunbo Lucas from Nigeria, who the prize in 1990 for his work on improving health in tropical countries.

Also part of the entourage will be Dr Joshua Lederberg, a geneticist who received the Nobel Prize for his work on microbial genetics and evolution in 1958.

During their stay, Her Royal Highness and her guests are expected to visit Satree Phuket School, the Prince of Songkla University, Wachira Phuket Hospital and the Phuket Marine Biological Center.

Once their Phuket tour is complete, Governor Udomsak said, the party will visit Phang Nga province.

This year’s Prince Mahidol Award ceremony will take place at the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok on November 30.
