Newborn baby found dead in toilet

CHALONG: The corpse of a newborn baby was discovered in a water tank in a toilet at Wat Chalong during the temple’s annual fair.

The gruesome discovery occurred just after midnight on Wednesday morning.

The baby, a 3-kilogram boy with the umbilical cord still attached, was found naked in an open tank in the woman’s restroom,.

Pol Maj Chana Sutthimas, an Inspector with the Chalong Police, told the Gazette that the baby’s remains are now at Vachira Phuket Hospital. He said it was proving difficult to find evidence leading to the person who abandoned the child because so many people had attended the fair that evening.

“We are not sure of the cause of death – whether the baby was stillborn or was murdered. I am not sure if he stopped breathing before he was placed in the water. Given his weight, I believe the child was born full-term, however,” he said.

The tiny corpse will be sent to the Nitivej Forensic Institute at the Police Hospital in Bangkok for autopsy, he added.
