Old Phuket Festival canceled

PHUKET CITY: The Old Phuket Festival, originally scheduled to take place along Thalang Rd from February 13 to 15, has been canceled as the nation mourns HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, who passed away on January 2.

The cancellation of what would have been the 10th annual festival follows a request made by the Royal Household Bureau on January 2 for a period of national mourning, during which all government officers and teachers are to wear black for 15 days.

The government also asked that public events be toned down or put on hold for 100 days while vigil is kept over Princess Galyani’s body.

Entertainment venue operators were also asked to observe the period of mourning.

Phuket City Municipality Deputy Mayor Kawee Tansukkatanont, who also heads the committee co-ordinating activities for the Old Phuket Festival, said that the committee unanimously agreed to cancel the festival this year.

“We plan to hold the festival as usual next year, although a date has not yet been set,” he added.

Phuket City Municipality will be holding a photo exhibition as planned during Chinese New Year. The exhibition will be held  February 13 to 15 at Thai Hua Museum on Krabi Road and will have a Sino-Portuguese theme.

Entrance will be free of charge.
