Only one Songkran road death in Phuket so far

PHUKET: With tomorrow the last day of the official Songkran holidays, the Phuket Provincial Office for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (ODPM) has announced that there has been just one road accident death in Phuket since April 11.

ODPM Chief Aroon Kerdsom told the Gazette, “We have the total number of deaths from road accidents from April 11 to 15 – and one Korean died; Min Gee Park, 28. He died at a hospital after a motorcycle accident. He did not have a passenger.

He added that 20 accidents with 22 people injured have been reported since April 11.

Last year’s Songkran holidays, from April 7 to 16, saw six deaths, 99 accidents and 96 injuries. This year officials were hoping to keep the road accident toll down to no more than three deaths, 34 accidents and 53 injuries.

K. Aroon added, “And for the last two days, today and tomorrow, I have already contacted the Thalang District Chief, because Thalang has the major inbound road, and asked him for cars to be checked and suggestions to be given to the drivers.”

“We have also told the Provincial Land Transportation Office that bus drivers must get enough sleep and not drink alcohol, because they must be able to drive to take people home.”
