Sewerage project almost complete

PHUKET TOWN: Phuket Town Mayor Phummisak Hongsyok has announced that the final phase of the project to upgrade Phuket Town’s sewers is nearing completion. Speaking at a press conference, Mayor Phummisak said, “Phase 2 [the final phase] of the project is 77% complete and is on target to finish on schedule, on January 2 next year.” He explained that, of the 12-kilometer radius of sewers that are to be connected to the treatment plant, only the outlying two kilometers still needs to be hooked up. Mayor Phummisak went on to explain that the project, funded to the tune of 900 million baht by Bangkok, was essential because of the rapid development of Phuket’s commercial and residential areas. To pay for the estimated 12-million-baht-a-year cost of running the treatment plant, Mayor Phummisak said the Municipality will introduce tariffs early next year. “We are considering charging hotels depending on how many rooms they have, and restaurants and other establishments according to how many square meters their premises occupy,” he said.
