Speed Limit Signs Sorely Needed

PHUKET TOWN: Widespread confusion and ignorance of the law with respect to speed limits in Phuket province was underscored in the Gazette Poll which closed at noon today. Only 22% of the 911 participants in the internet poll knew (or guessed correctly) that speed limits apply to all roads on the island (and throughout Thailand). In response to the question, “Are there any speed limits on the roads of Phuket,” 35% thought that there were, but only on some roads; 16% thought there were none; and 27% said they didn’t know. In order to clarify the issue and convey the results of the poll, Gazette reporter Saowanee (‘Tai’) Adulkeawpaluk met this afternoon with Phuket’s chief traffic inspector, Pol Lt Col Teeraphol Thipjaroen. The officer said that “normally” there would be speed limit signs along the province’s roads. He acknowledged that “some” roads in Phuket do not have these, but said the signs would be installed “soon.” As for the law, Pol Lt Col Teeraphol advised that unless otherwise posted, “general vehicles,” e.g., cars, jeeps, motorcycles and pick-up trucks, are restricted to a maximum speed of 80 kph in municipalities and 90 kph elsewhere. With the same proviso, “heavy” vehicles, (those weighing more than 1,200 kg), are restricted to 60 kph in municipalities and 80 kph elsewhere. In the speed limit poll, tourists demonstrated the least knowledge of the law, with only 17% of them understanding that speed restrictions apply to all roads here. Issues raised in the Gazette Poll change at noon every Friday. The polls appear on both the Phuket Residents’ Page (www.phket.loxinfo.co.th/~gazette) and on the Phuket Gazette Online at thethaiger.com.
