Three drown off Karon Beach

KARON: Three construction workers from Isarn drowned in front of the Nong Harn inlet yesterday afternoon. Pol Capt Teerawat Liamsuwan, of Chalong Police Station, told the Gazette, “Two 21-year-old men, Teung Suthamma and Duangden Sawangwong, and a 17-year-old girl, Jaruwan Pakya, were swimming with three friends when a large wave crashed down on them, pushing them underwater.” Of the three friends, two made it back to shore by themselves. A Kusonlatham Foundation volunteer, who was on the beach at the time, took a jet-ski out into the rough surf and rescued Bayan Thaimeng, 15, from Udon Thani. The three were taken to Patong Hospital for a check-up. But K. Teung, K. Duangden and K. Jaruwan did not make it back to shore. Police and Kusonlatham volunteers discovered their bodies at 2:30 pm. “They probably didn’t understand that the red flags posted along the beach were a warning that it was dangerous to go swimming,” Capt Teerawat said. The bodies have been taken to Wachira Hospital where they will remain until claimed by relatives.
