Too much of a good thing

LOPBURI (AFP): Mike the orangutan has been hospitalized with serious fatigue after spending too much time making love to his new mate, the director of Lopburi Zoo said today. “Mike is very weak. His legs and arms are very weak and he refused to eat any food yesterday,” the director, Lt Col Virat Phupeingchai, said. Veterinarian Chisanu Tiyacharoensri said part of the reason for Mike’s poor health was his amorous preoccupation with his new wife, Mali. “I think Mali is in better shape than Mike,” Khun Chisanu said. Mike became a star in Asia after he “married” Zuzu, from Taiwan, in 1996, in front of a crowd of more than 1,000 people. But Zuzu began to reject Mike’s amorous advances soon after giving birth to their first offspring. A Thai animal lover donated Mali to Lopburi zoo in August, hoping that Mike would find happiness the second time round. “This morning we X-rayed his heart, liver and lungs, and they were normal, but he is having some digestive problems,” Khun Chisanu said. Although Mike’s condition is not life-threatening, Khun Chisanu said he expects the orangutan to spend at least one more night in hospital before returning to his home and his obsession.
