PATONG: Some 700 people joined a memorial service for those who died in the tsunami three years ago, each placing a lit candle in the sand, basking the beach in a solemn glow.

Guests and dignitries, including Swedish Ambassador Lennart Linner and Tourism and Sports Minister Dr Suwit Yodmanee, joined the event, giving speeches on loss, grief and recovery and laying wreaths in memory of those lost to the waves.

In addition to the “sea of candles” were more prominent features, including miniature towers with candles and wreaths surrounding their bases.
