Ukraine dance troupe wows Phuket

PHUKET: Fans of traditional eastern European dance will have a chance to catch the world-renowned Vohon Ukrainian Dance Ensemble at the Simon Star Cabaret in Phuket this afternoon.

The 50-strong troupe is on the island courtesy of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, who helped organize the event in order to raise funds for the Thai Red Cross Society, Phuket Chapter.

Admission to the event, from 2pm to 3:30pm, is free of charge. But as the event is a fundraiser, donations are encouraged.

Yesterday’s performance attracted some 300 people to the theater, about half its capacity.

The ensemble, which formed about 25 years ago, is currently under the artistic direction of Ken Kachmar, Trish Kushniruk and Garrett Nestorowich.

According to the troupe’s website:

“Their unique styles combine to provide the dancers with challenging and innovative choreography, including both regional repertoire and character storyline pieces. Under this team, the group of over 40 dancers presents a skillful blend of Ukrainian folk dance, ballet, modern and jazz dance. The result is a captivating display of experimental Ukrainian Dance that is blazing a remarkable path for the group around the world.”

The high-energy of the performance is reflected in the troupe’s logo, which incorporates images of leaping red flames.

The Simon Star Cabaret is located off Samkong Road in Rassada subdistrict, behind the Phuket Rajabhat University campus.
