Video Report: Laguna post-tsunami Community Learning Center still going strong

PHUKET: Laguna Phuket’s Community Learning Center, established as part of the recovery efforts from the 2004 tsunami, recently re-opened after major refurbishment to mark 10 years since the disaster.

The opening ceremony of the newly revamped center was held on Monday, attended by approximately 100 participants comprising government officials, Laguna Phuket management, Cherng Talay villagers, and members of the press.

Participants were asked to join in a moment of silence in remembrance of the 10th tsunami commemoration. Then followed a recital of Thai classical flute before a gong was struck to signify the official opening of the center.

The center was formally established in March 2007 from Phuket tsunami recovery funds to develop long-term assistance for those affected by the tsunami.

Originally set up as a community English-language center providing free English courses to community members. To date, 7,328 students have enrolled with the program, with 4,250 completing the beginner’s course, 3,025 students completing the intermediate course and 13 completing the advanced course.

“I’d like to thank all of our supporters, especially the Cherng Talay Municipality, for being a great partner from the start,” said Ravi Chandran, managing director of Laguna Phuket.

“The center has served its purposes for over seven years and more than 7,000 local people had benefited from it.

“With continued support from all, I believe those numbers can double. We are well on our way to developing sustainable communities.”

Starting in January, the center will provide free and open community education with training on general life skills to empower individuals, so that they can realize their potential at home, in the workplace and in the community.
