Yellow-top brigade rides safe

PHUKET: In a bid to promote safety on Phuket’s roads, the Phuket Provincial Office and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM-Phuket) joined a nationwide campaign on Tuesday to persuade more riders to wear crash helmets.

As part of the celebrations of HM Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 80th birthday this year, Bangkok-based Road Accident Victims Protection Co Ltd is producing motorcycle helmets cast in yellow with the emblem of HM The King.

Initially, 80,000 helmets were made, with 600 ending up in Phuket. The helmets, being sold at 80 baht each, sold out on the first day of sale on August 23.

Phuket Vice-Governor Tri Augkaradacha, president of the “Ride Safe, Wear a Helmet” project in Phuket, was on hand to officiate the launch of the project at Phuket Provincial Hall with students and island residents who own motorcycles.

All money from the sale of the helmets will be donated to the Chaipattana Foundation, which promotes the development of Thai social and economic welfare activities.

The next batch of helmets can be reserved now at the Phuket Provincial Office at Phuket Provincial Hall.

Simply leave your name, address and telephone number and pay in advance, A government officer will phone when the next batch arrives, though a date and quantity has yet to be confirmed. To buy a helmet, motorists must show their driving licenses.
