Hundreds of monkeys in Krabi waiting for food on the street

About a hundred macaques living in a mangrove near Baan Talane Pier in Krabi are flocking to nearby streets to get food from pedestrians packing the drive-way with a groups of monkeys and frequently blocking the road altogether.

“I travel to Koh Yao Noi, Phang Nga through this pier regularly and I can see the number of monkeys growing all the time. Sometimes, when there are tourists with a pack of chips or food vendors, the monkeys attack them to get food. Their number keeps increasing,” said a passenger of the pier.

Meanwhile, Khao Thong Tambon Administration Organisation Chief, Somchai Laosakul, says he was aware of the issue and that he will look into a solution.

“The monkeys live nearby, so they get out to steal food from the passersby and vendors. Sometimes, they also get inside the buildings at the pier but they never harm anyone. Their numbers keeps increasing very fast so I will consult with the departments involved to find a solution,” he said.
